Description
Who is this Aimed at:
- Candidates who wish to further their knowledge and skills within gymnastics coaching, and operate independently taking responsibility of sessions. As a level 2 coach you will also be able to lead your own sessions, mentor and oversee fellow coaches, and open your own club. You can also help participants develop the skills required to compete in participation and national event competitions.
What are the Pre - requisites:
- Candidates can only attend the course at 18 years of age and must be an adult member with a current Gymnastics Ireland registered club.
- Compliance with legislative and Gymnastics Ireland Garda vetting (ROI) and AccessNI vetting (NI) requirements
- Compliance with GI Safeguarding Training policy (hold a valid Sport Ireland or SportNI Safeguarding Workshop certificate)
- Candidate must hold at least one of the following specific Gymnastics Ireland coaching qualification (see below)
- Level 1 WAG
- Level 2 GymSTART
What To Expect:
An informative programme that builds on competencies learned at level 1 and develops;
- the ability to prepare for, deliver and review a coaching session(s)
- the understanding of responsibilities associated with running a club
Delivery Method, Dates and Times:
Online theory and practical delivery supported by mentored hours:
- Throughout the course - eLearning assignments
- Day 1 - March 12th: 6:00pm-9:00 pm - Online Coaching Theory
- Day 2 - March 13th: 6:00pm-9:00pm - Online Coaching Theory
Venue: National Gymnastics Training Centre, National Sports Campus, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15
- Day 1 - March 23rd: 9:30am-5:30pm - Practical Coaching in the Gym
- Day 2 - March 24th: 9:30am-5:30pm - Practical Coaching in the Gym
- Day 3 - April 6th: 9:30-5:30pm - Practical Coaching in the Gym
- Day 4 - April 7th: 9.30am-5:30pm - Formative Assessment in the Gym
- Day 5 - Final Assessment in the Gym (Date TBC)
Do I Need To Bring Gymnasts:
- Day 1 & 2 Online Theory – no gymnasts required
- Days 1, 2 and 3 Practical - minimum of one gymnast required.
- Day 4 Formative Assessment - minimum of three required.
- Participants should be working towards the skills included on the course syllabus.
- Day 5 Final Assessment - Minimum of three required. Please ensure one gymnast is able to perform the complete skills in your skills matrix box (with or without support).
Do I Need To Find A Mentor:
Your mentor will be someone to help you throughout the course to develop your sport gymnastics knowledge and the delivery methods such as the ‘How to Coach’ skills. Before you enroll onto the course you will need to find a mentor. Your mentor is required to hold a level 2 qualification or above.
What Resources Are Included:
- LearnUpon (LMS) online resources and a discipline specific resource book (printed format).
Price:
€590 - Course costs include the delivery and initial assessment, any further assessments will incur additional charges.

- Recall the course programme and when assessment takes place
- Explain the roles and responsibilities of a level 2 coach
- Identify to whom level 2 coaches are responsible
- Differentiate between gymnast-centred and coach-centred behaviours and philosophies
- Identify your own basic coaching philosophy
- Define a hazard and a risk
- Assess risks in a gymnastics context
- Understand apparatus set up & use
- Complete a participant profile form
- State the benefits of planning
- Produce a progressive, structured, and gymnast-centred session plan
- Select and use a variety of evaluation strategies
- Recognise that people learn in different ways, so the coaching style needs to be varied to accommodate the learners
- Explain the ways in which people may prefer to receive information
- Identify relevant coaching styles to be used at various stages of the skill learning process
- Link coaching skills to coaching styles
- Review others’ coaching practice
- Self-reflect
