Professor Camilla Knight: Working with Parents to Enhance Children’s Experiences and Performance

The positive involvement of parents and guardians is critical to long-term engagement and success of youth gymnasts. Through this webinar we will discuss what appropriate parental involvement looks like, why it is important, and how coaches and managers can work with parents to enhance their involvement. The main focus will be on providing practical tips and strategies based on 15 years of research and experience.
Professor Camilla Knight is an Emeria Professor in Sport Psychology and Youth Sport at Swansea University and a visiting Professor at University of Agder, Norway as well as being the Director of Impact, Innovation, and Engagement at Greenhouse Sports. She is also an HCPC registered practitioner psychologist, accredited sport and exercise scientist and fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science. Camilla has spent the last twenty years conducting research exploring the experiences of children in sport, with a particular focus upon the influence of parents. She is co-author of “Parenting in youth sport: From Research to Practice” (Routledge, 2014) and co-editor of “Sport Psychology for Young Athletes” (Routledge, 2017). She has published over 25 book chapters on topics related to parental involvement in sport, as well as 70 peer reviewed journal articles. Camilla also consults widely with a range of national and international sports organisations on parental involvement and youth sport participation more broadly.
